Saltillo Cleaning and Sealing
Named for a region in Mexico Saltillo tile is a type of terra cotta tile that has its origins in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. It is made by pressing clay from the region into a frame, square or something else, to define its shape and size and then firing it in an oven which brings out the unique colors. Saltillo tile comes in a variety of shapes and colors, with shades ranging from red to red orange to orange.
Saltillo tiles are extremely soft and porous which makes them extremely difficult to clean and maintain. They often have topical sealers applied to them to help protect them which can make cleaning even more difficult. Stripping the sealer is necessary to properly clean the tiles. Afterward the tiles must be resealed.
