Granite Sealing
Countertops and even flooring made of granite (or other natural materials) can be quite expensive and, if not properly maintained, can be destroyed by intrusion.
Not all granite is created equal some is more porous than others.
To check if your granite countertops should be sealed, perform this simple test:
- Pour some water on the countertop – about ¼ should be plenty
- Note the time that you poured the water (or use a stopwatch or timer on your phone) and time how long it takes for the water to be absorbed (the granite will darken)
Immediate Absorption: seal annually and wipe spills quickly
4-5 Minutes: seal every 3-5 years
10 Minutes: seal every 5 years or more; use the water test periodically to determine
30 Minutes, or doesn’t absorb: doesn’t require sealing
